Eulogy

October 4th, 2007

Baxter patiently.JPGThis morning from my kitchen window, I beheld Mrs. Next Door Neighbor standing outside beside Richard the Beagle’s chain-link fence. She was petting Richard with one hand while holding something resembling a small furry ball in the other.

A small furry ball that was most definitely not Baxter.

I felt my lower lip pooch out. Small furry not-Baxters could only mean one thing.

Upon my inquiry, Mrs. NDN confirmed that after months of steady decline, Baxter had finally been put to sleep. Turns out he had stomach cancer for quite a while but hung on as long as he could.

“He was so ill, it was really like hospice care for the last two months,” said Mrs. NDN. “But I could tell he just wasn’t ready to go.”

Apparently Baxter reached readiness in August, and now he’s chasing squirrels and teasing dogs in the eternally sunny neighborhoods of Kitty Heaven.

In previous posts, I’ve already waxed poetic about my affection for Baxter and how indulging his Hobbit-like eating habits enabled me, Allergy Girl, to pretend I had a pet.

Lest the old tom start rolling his eyes at me from the great beyond, I won’t eulogize Baxter further, except to say so long, dear friend, and thanks for leaving me with a useless half-full bag of Friskies.

At 92 in cat years, Baxter had been a steady and devoted companion to Mrs. & Mr. NDN for twenty. So it’s no surprise that when he was gone, they vowed they would never have any more pets….

Meet Rocket. Do you think he likes cat food?

    RIP, Baxter.

And seriously, his name is Rocket? That’s too funny, as he looks a bit too much lik a mop to be all that speedy!

Poor Baxter! I’m sure he’s up in Kitty Heaven now. I hope my cat isn’t being too mean to him. And that dog is too cute!

Oh man. I’m so sorry! I can’t believe they didn’t have the decency to ask you before they put him to sleep.

Yes, our beloved curmudgeon is gone… I am sure he knew folks loved him, though probably not that half of them are online. Baxter, where ever you are, your virtual fan club salutes you.

Poor kitty. I know it’s way oversaid, but he really is better off now. Still, I kind of miss him and I never even met him.
