All-righty then. So here's how it REALLY happened:

It was our first year in the new house. Awww. Since we had no data as to candy consumption by local costumed midgets, it seemed a prudent risk mitigation approach to limit the candy purchase to a single bag of high quality candy (chocolate) and several bags of lower quality candy (sugar). This would have the benefit of providing a suitable amount of candy if turnout was high, but reduced financial losses and potential weight gains if turnout was low. It also provided for a reasonable mixture of candy in the halloween bowl, allowing each costumed midget to make a choice as to what they wanted, provided they arrived prior to the quality candy being dispensed. This had the additional benefit of discouraging repeat visits by older costumed midgets who were less cute and more liable to egg our new house.

Needless to say, I was instantly branded a party-pooping tightwad who ruined halloween forever.

I will state for the record that we now only purchase low quality, sugar-based candy, as evidenced by the photo in the post, due to our inability to not eat leftover chocolate treats.
