Just because it might ruin our lives doesn’t mean it can’t be funny

Chances are very good that sometime soon, those of you with sweeties may end discussing with them the recent national economic, uh, downturn.
Your sweetie may remind you rather anxiously that one or both of your jobs depend on the “luxury economy,” and that if there is no more luxury economy, he will probably not be able to continue supporting you in the manner to which you would like to remain accustomed.
This, of course, is where you do not look deeply into his eyes and tell him that love means never having to say ‘refrigerator box.’
Sigh. Some people have no sense of humor.

Don’t be glum. I think this financial crisis could turn out to be very beneficial for the country.
Our culture of consumerism isn’t healthy. What actual satisfaction is there in buying? That’s all we as a country do now–buy. We don’t create anymore. The manufacturing is in Mexico and China; the technology’s in India; the auto makers are hanging on by a thread.
I think a Depression could shake us all out of this ennui of modern living and spark a renaissance of old-time American will and ingenuity.
Not that I’m looking forward to a Depression or anything; I just think sometimes a revolution is necessary for progress. We’re a bloated, stagnant country these days, and this might make us lean and hungry and sharp-fanged again.
Talk about no sense of humor.
It was a JOKE, Hillary. That is the opposite of glum.
Oh, sorry, Uppity. I thought you were going for tragicomedy, and that the title and last line were meant to be melancholy. My mistake. I was trying to offer an encouraging thought.
No worries, Hillary. I was mostly teasin’ on Kevin for being a worry wart. It’s one of my hobbies.
